Cannot Use Remote Control Feature in Terminal Server Client to Connect to a Citrix ICA Session

ID: Q243290

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server

SYMPTOMS

When you try to use the Remote Control feature on a Citrix ICA session, you receive the following error message:

The requested session cannot be controlled remotely. This may be because the session is disconnected or does not currently have a user logged on. Also, you cannot control a session remotely from the system console or control the system console remotely. And you cannot remote control your own current session.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because the protocols used by these two clients, RDP and ICA, are not compatible.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

Windows 2000 Terminal Services Client provides a new Remote Control feature. This feature allows you to connect to and remotely control one Terminal Services Client session from another Terminal Services Client session.

Citrix has a feature similar to the Remote Control feature known as Shadowing. While you can shadow one ICA session from another ICA session, you cannot use a Terminal Services Client to perform the same administrative task upon a Citrix ICA session. The reverse is also true.
