Programs Using Custom Transforms to Install All Features Still Generate Windows Installer Messages

ID: Q243335

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server

SYMPTOMS

When you start a program (such as Microsoft Word 2000) and try to use one of its components (such as Spell Checker), you may receive Windows Installer messages indicating the component is being installed. Also, this may occur even if you are using custom transforms to have your program installed completely by previously selecting the "Run from My Computer" feature (in Microsoft Office 2000), or its equivalent.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because the main program (in our example, Word 2000) is a "feature" that is associated with shortcuts in the user interface. The components are not visible in the user interface and nothing in the installer package or transform triggers their installation until they are called for use by the feature.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

MORE INFORMATION

This behavior occurs because of the design of the Windows Installer and the relationship of "features" to "components" and their usage in MSI and MST packages. This behavior may occur in any program or programs that use the "Run from My Computer" feature or its equivalent in a third-party product.
