SYMPTOMS

When you open a folder that is configured to show a thumbnail view of .jpg files, you may see an outline of the thumbnail and a small program icon where the image should be displayed.

CAUSE

This issue can occur if you uninstall Microsoft Photo Editor contained in Microsoft Office 97 Profesional.

RESOLUTION

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys and Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and Delete Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it. If you are running Windows NT, you should also update your Emergency Repair Disk (ERD).
To resolve this issue, use Regedit to associate the .jpg file extension in the registry. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.

  2. Open the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpg registry key.

  3. Create a new registry key and name it ShellEx.

  4. In the ShellEx registry key create a new key and name it:

  5. {BB2E617C-0920-11d1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1}
  6. In the {BB2E617C-0920-11d1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1} registry key, edit the default value to use the following value data:

  7. {7376D660-C583-11d0-A3A5-00C04FD706EC}

STATUS
