Uninstalling Directory Service Migration Tool from Windows 2000 Server After Beta3 (Build 2031)

ID: Q243636

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server

SUMMARY

The Directory Service Migration Tool (Dsmigrate) was removed from Windows 2000 after Beta 3 (build 2031). However, if you upgrade a Windows 2000-based server (that is running Beta 3 or earlier) with Dsmigrate installed to RC1 or RC2, Dsmigrate is still installed on the computer. In this situation, there is no way in the user interface to remove Dsmigrate after the upgrade.

Upgrading to Windows 2000 RC3 or later is blocked if Dsmigrate is installed on the computer. If you are running RC2 or later with Dsmigrate installed, you can download the Deldsm.exe tool to uninstall Dsmigrate. You can download Deldsm.exe from the following Microsoft Web site:

http://ntbeta.microsoft.com

MORE INFORMATION

Note that Dsmigrate is dependent on the following components:

  • Gateway Services for NetWare (GSNW)

  • NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Compatible Transport Protocol

Installing Dsmigrate installs GSNW and NWLink. As a result, you cannot uninstall GSNW and NWLink with Dsmigrate installed. If you upgraded from Beta 3 and you receive an error message (that refers to a dependency on the Directory Service Migration tool) when you try to uninstall GSNW, you can use the Deldsm.exe tool to remove GSNW and NWLink.

Running Deldsm.exe allows for the removal of the dependency and the uninstallation of GSNW and NWLink. However, you must manually delete the Dsmigrate files from the Program Files\Dsmigrat folder. If the Windows File Protection (WFP) feature is enabled, WFP replaces these files if you remove them. Removing the Dsmigrate dynamic-link library DLL files from the System32\Dllcache folder allows you to remove the files permanently.
