Redirected Printing Does Not Work in Terminal Services

SYMPTOMS

Printer redirection does not work on a Windows 2000-based server with Terminal Services enabled. The following event is logged in Event Viewer:

Event ID: 1103
Event Type: Error
Event Source: TermServDevices
Description:
An internal communication error occurred. Redirected printing will no longer function.
Also, the Rdpdr.sys driver is not loaded (look for Terminal Server Device Redirector under System Devices in Device Manager).


RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, uninstall and then reinstall Terminal Services.

To uninstall:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.


  2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs, and then click Add/Remove Windows Components.


  3. Click to clear the Terminal Services check box, and then click OK.


To reinstall:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.


  2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs, and then click Add/Remove Windows Components.


  3. Click to select the Terminal Services check box, and then click OK.
