Wrong Media Status on Hewlett-Packard Computer Running Microsoft Windows 2000

ID: Q244502

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional

SYMPTOMS

When you check the status of the Local Area Connection in the Network and Dial-up Connections folder on a Hewlett-Packard (HP) Kayak workstation that is running Windows 2000, you see the following status message:

Network cable unplugged
You may receive this message even though the local area network (LAN) connection is working properly. The Ipconfig utility reports the following status:
Ethernet adapter:

Media State: Cable Disconnected
Description: HP Ethernet with LAN remote power adapter
Physical Address: 00-60-B0-A1-0A-B2
If you try to change the media status by disconnecting and then reconnecting the cable, the status is still incorrect, and Event Viewer records multiple instances of the following Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) event:
The system detected that network adapter \DEVICE\TCPIP_{4B6FE6AC-137B-11D3-90C6-863B04C73C36} was connected to the network, and has initiated normal operation over the network adapter.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Windows 2000.
