Tooltip Text Shows Hindi or Tamil Characters as Boxes in Multilingual String

SYMPTOMS

When you use Notepad on a computer running Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional to save a file that contains characters in various languages, the Hindi or Tamil characters appear as boxes in the ToolTip text.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional.

Steps to Reproduce Problem

  1. Start Notepad, and then save a file that contains Hindi or Tamil characters along with characters in other languages.


  2. Quit Notepad.


  3. Open the file in Notepad, and then resize the window so that the full file name is not visible in the title bar.


  4. Place the cursor over the title bar to see the ToolTip text.


  5. Hindi and Tamil characters appear as squares, but characters in other languages, such as English, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Thai, and Arabic, are correctly displayed.
