ID: Q244552

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server

SYMPTOMS

When you are attempting to restore files to an alternate location with Backup (Ntbackup.exe), you may receive an "Access violation" error message in Ntbackup.exe.

CAUSE

This behavior can be caused by unusually long path names (over 1 kilobyte, or KB) in the files being restored.

RESOLUTION

Although this behavior is not likely to occur, you can use either of the following methods if it does:

  • Restore the files to their original locations.

  • Restore the files to a single folder.

To restore the files to the original locations, you should first move the files, if any exist, from the original location to an alternate folder. Then, restore the files by selecting only the files you need.

MORE INFORMATION

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
