Guest User Cannot Connect to Terminal Server from Windows 2000 Platform

ID: Q244691

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
  • Microsoft Windows NT Server version 4.0, Terminal Server Edition

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to connect as a guest to a computer running Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0, Terminal Server Edition, from a client computer running Microsoft Windows 2000, a time-out occurs, usually after 30 seconds, and you receive the following error message:

Terminal Server has ended the connection

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because the Guest account in Windows 2000 does not have Write permission to the MSLicensing key in the registry, where the license is stored. Write permission is necessary to connect to a Terminal Server.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Windows 2000.
