Sysprep Resets Custom Connectoid Names in My Network Places

ID: Q244836

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server

SYMPTOMS

When you use the System Preparation tool (Sysprep), any custom connectoid names you created on the master images are reset to their default names when the image is applied to the target computers (for example, Local Area Connection or Local Area Connection n, where n represents a number if more than one connection exists).

CAUSE

When the mini-setup wizard runs, these values are reset by the networking installation portion. The old values are discarded.

RESOLUTION

If you need these connectoids to keep the set names from the master image, use the Netset.exe tool included in the Microsoft Windows 2000 Resource Kit. You can use Netset.exe to set network configurations on client computers using an answer file. You can automate this procedure in the GuiRunOnce section of the Sysprep.inf answer file.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Windows 2000.

MORE INFORMATION

For more information about Netset.exe or the Sysprep answer file parameters, refer to the Microsoft Windows 2000 Resource Kit.
