The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server

SYMPTOMS

When you log off of a computer using roaming profiles, Windows 2000 may not be able to copy the profile correctly so you can log on to other computers on the network.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

When you log off of a computer, a roaming profile is saved on that computer. The code that performs this function attempts to save the folder structure while impersonating the user. The impersonation call is not checked for failure in Windows 2000 build 2128 or earlier. If the impersonation call does not work correctly, no event is recorded and you may experience problems with roaming profiles.

Windows 2000 checks the source token during the impersonation phase and duplicates the source token. If you do experience an issue saving a user's profile to the local computer, check to see if other users are experiencing the same issue. If only one user experiences this issue, there could be some internal record damage to that particular user account.
