Muisetup.log File Records Error Messages in the Language of the Person Running Muisetup.exe

ID: Q246008

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server

SYMPTOMS

When you use the Muisetup.exe tool to install multi-language user interface files to support additional languages from the Windows 2000 Multi-language version CD-ROM, the %systemroot%\muisetup.log contains installation and uninstallation logging information. The log contents are in English, except for error codes returned from system calls, which will be logged in the language previously chosen by the user running the Muisetup.exe tool. Also, the error code may appear in another language, or possibly be in non-readable characters, depending on factors such as which language the error was generated from and the active language font in use at the time you read the Muisetup.log.

RESOLUTION

To work around this issue and read the errors in the log, change the language of the logged in user to the foreign language recorded in the log file, or re-install the Muisetup.exe language that generated the error message while your computer is using your native language. This will permit you to read the error messages in your native language.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
