  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server

SYMPTOMS

When you gain access to a Distributed File System (DFS) link through the local file system, you may receive the following error message:

<DRIVE>:<FOLDER>\<DFSLINKFOLDER> is not accessible. Access is denied.

CAUSE

This issue can occur because Windows 2000 uses local file system placeholders below the shared DFS root folder to repesent DFS links. You cannot open the placeholders by using the local file system, you can only open them by using the DFS sharepoint.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue gain access to the shared resources by browsing to the server's share rather than through the local file system.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
