Incorrect Eject Option for PC Card ATA Drives when Detected as Removable Disks

ID: Q246986

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional

SYMPTOMS

When you use an advanced technology attachment (ATA) PC Card on a portable computer running Windows 2000 Professional, the card appears in My Computer as a removable disk. When you right-click the icon for the card, you see Eject as an option, but when you click Eject nothing happens.

CAUSE

This issue occurs when the ATA device manufacturer incorrectly sets the removable media bit in the device configuration registers. This causes Windows 2000 to see the device as a removable medium. The removable-media setting is only for Jaz or Zip devices that have ejectable disks.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional.
