Disabling and Re-enabling APM Alters Power Schemes Timeouts

SYMPTOMS

When you disable and then enable advanced power management (APM) on a computer running Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional, the power schemes change. The changes affect the automatic standby and hibernation timeout options and can cause battery power loss.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional.

The following tables show what the power scheme settings are when you disable or enable APM. Use the appropriate set of steps to view the changes.

To view power scheme changes on a computer that has the APM auto-enable feature:

  1. Install Windows 2000.


  2. In Control Panel, double-click Power Options and then view the power scheme, noting the settings.


  3. Disable APM.


  4. Restart the computer.


  5. Enable APM.


  6. View the power scheme again to see the changes.

Standby After 20 Min. After 5 Min.

To view power scheme changes on a computer that supports APM but is not auto-enabled:

  1. Install Windows 2000.


  2. In Control Panel, double-click Power Options, and then view the power scheme, noting the settings.


  3. Enable APM.


  4. View the power scheme and note the changes.


  5. Disable APM.


  6. Restart the computer.


  7. Enable APM.


  8. View the power scheme to see the changes.
