TCP/IP Does Not Support Blackhole or Reject Routes

SYMPTOMS

The Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) protocol in Microsoft Windows 2000 Server does not provide a 'blackhole' (or reject) route to silently drop a packet that cannot be forwarded to its destination. This situation can cause routing loops.

RESOLUTION

To work around this behavior, create an IP-in-IP tunnel that uses one of the router's normal IP addresses as a source address and 127.0.0.1 as a destination address. Then add a 'blackhole' route as a static route over this interface.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
