Multihomed RIS Server Does Not Answer Clients

SYMPTOMS

When you are using a multihomed Remote Installation service (RIS) server, Pre-boot Execution Environment (PXE) clients may not receive an answer from the server. The clients may display a message similar to:

DHCP..........
No reply from a server.
Press any key to reboot system.

When you check the Application event log, there are no error messages from the Boot Information Negotiation Layer service (Binlsvc). The event log also indicates that the server is authorized in Active Directory and can service clients. The multihomed system is also running the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) service with active, enabled scopes for each network adapter.

Note that using RIS on a multihomed system requires that you also run the DHCP service, and each network adapter must have an active and enabled scope. If not, PXE clients are not answered by the server.

CAUSE

When the RIS server was authorized by using the DHCP snap-in, the name of the server was entered instead of the IP address of each enabled network adapter in the system. The name that was provided in the Authorization dialog box maps back to an IP address, so only one network adapter ends up being authorized.

RESOLUTION

When you authorize the server by using the DHCP snap-in, type the IP address of each network adapter in the system instead of using the server name. For example, if your system has three network adapters, you must authorize each network adapter, almost as if you were authorizing three different servers.
