Data in Remote Storage Value Becomes Inaccurate Over Time

ID: Q247846

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server

SYMPTOMS

Over a variable period of time, the Data in Remote Storage indicator may become inaccurate, possibly indicating that more data than actually exists is in off-line storage.

NOTE: To view the remote storage values for a volume:

  1. Right-click the Remote Storage Server-managed volume drive letter, and then click Properties.

  2. Click the Remote Storage tab.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because a Validate Files job is not run every time files are migrated to off-line storage. When files are migrated to off-line storage, the "Data in Remote Storage" value is increased to reflect the correct amount. However, when files in off-line storage are deleted from the volume, this value is not decremented.

RESOLUTION

Over a period of time as files in offline storage are deleted, the "Data In Remote Storage" number can become inaccurate. Depending on the activity of your RSS-based server, you may want to schedule a Validate Files job to run on the volume:

  1. Start the Remote Storage Administrators Snap-in, and then select Managed Volumes.

  2. Right-click the RSS-managed volume you want to run the Validate Files job on, and then click Properties.

  3. On the context menu, point to All Tasks, and then click Validate files. You will receive notification that Remote Storage will create the task, and you can then view its progress using the Task Scheduler. Click OK.

NOTE: If you view the Remote Storage properties for the volume, the "Data In Remote Storage" value has been reset to 0, and is slowly increasing while files are being validated.

While the preceding process has only submitted a task that will run once, it is recommended a Validate Files job be submitted at least once a month. To automate this process, you can find the Validate Files job submitted by Remote Storage in Task Scheduler and change its properties so that it executes on a reoccurring basis.
