Cannot Install SimCity 3000 Building Architect Tools and 1.1 Patch in Windows 2000

SYMPTOMS

When you download SimCity 3000 Building Architect Tools and the version 1.1 patch in a compressed self-extracting file and then run the file, you receive the following error message after Setup begins:

You either don't have DirectX installed, or you have an unrecognizable version. You will need to install DirectX 6.0 in order to use the SimCity 3000 Building Architect.

Whether you click Yes or No, Setup seems to continue normally, and shortcuts are placed on the Start menu. When you click one of the shortcuts, you receive a "missing shortcut" error message. If you check the hard disk, you may notice that no files were copied to the program's folder.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because Windows 2000 includes DirectX 7.

WORKAROUND

Use any unzipping tool (such as WinZip) to extract the files from the compressed file manually. Then, run the extracted Setup.exe file. For additional information about this issue, please contact the program's manufacturer.
