CAUSE

This issue can occur if you did not set the following environment variables:

  • DSDIT
  • DSLOG
  • SYSVOL

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, create the DSDIT, DSLOG, and SYSVOL environment variables and set them as follows:

  • DSDIT - Full directory path where the Ntds.dit file is stored (for example, C:\Winnt\Ntds)

  • DSLOG - Full directory path where the directory service logs are stored (for example, C:\Winnt\Ntds)

  • SYSVOL - Full directory path of the System Volume (for example, C:\Winnt\Sysvol)

These paths are specified as part of running the Active Directory Installation Wizard (Dcpromo.exe).

See the Windows 2000 Help for information on adding or changing environment variables through the GUI. Alternatively, environment variables can be set from the command line using the Setx.exe ustility included in the Windows 2000 Resource Kit. See the Windows 2000 Resource Kit Tools Help for information about the Setx.exe utility.
