PRB: Server is Restarted, Instead of Being Shut Down

ID: Q195325

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows NT Server version 4.0, Terminal Server Edition

SYMPTOMS

When the Shutdown Computer dialog is invoked from a Terminal Server client session, and shutdown is selected, the server is restarted instead of being shut down.

CAUSE

Terminal Server checks to see if the shutdown request was issued from session 0 (zero), console session. If the request is from a session other than session 0 (zero), the server converts the request to a restart request.

RESOLUTION

The InitiateSystemShutdown() function can be issued from the thin client or from the Windows NT-based computer that is running the Terminal Server client software. This function call is only supported on the Windows NT platform.

The Windows NT Resource Kit contains two utilities that will issue InitiateSystemShutdown(). They are shutgui.exe and shutdown.exe.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

MORE INFORMATION

Terminal Server ships with a shutdown EXE. This utility is different from the one on the resource kit.
