SP4 Cannot Be Installed from a Terminal Server Client Session

This article describes the Microsoft policy on installing Service Pack 4 for Terminal Server from a Terminal Server client session.

Any application that is going to have a system-wide impact should be installed in the following manner:

  1. Install at the Terminal Server console (session 0).


  2. Install under the administrtive security context.


  3. Place server in install mode.


Installing Service Pack 4 for Terminal Server, as with any service pack, from any session other than session 0 is unsupported. Adverse effects will occur if not installed from the console session. A reinstallation of the operating system is required to correct any problems.
