White Objects in WMF or Drawing Do Not Print on Color Printer

SYMPTOMS

Windows Metafile (.WMF) graphics or drawings that you create using the Word 6.0 for Windows drawing tools print incorrectly on color printers if the graphic image contains white objects. The image prints as if the white object does not exist.

NOTE: Microsoft has reproduced this problem printing from Word version 6.0 for Windows and Works version 3.0 for Windows.


CAUSE

This problem occurs if the Use Color option is selected in the Options dialog box for the printer driver. Microsoft has reproduced this problem with all color dot-matrix and ink jet printer drivers that use the Windows UNIDRV.DLL and DMCOLOR.DLL files (including EPSON24.DRV, EPSON9.DRV, CITUS24.DRV, PANSON24.DRV, and STAR24E.DRV).


WORKAROUND

This problem does not occur with Microsoft Draw objects, so you can work around this problem by converting your .WMF or Word drawing to a Microsoft Draw object using the following steps:

  1. Select the .WMF or Word drawing and cut or copy it to the Clipboard by choosing Cut or Copy from the Edit menu.


  2. From the Insert menu, choose Object.


  3. Select Microsoft Drawing from the Object Type list and then choose OK.


  4. Paste your graphic in Microsoft Draw by choosing Paste from the Edit menu.


  5. From the File menu, choose Update And Return To <Document Name>. Choose Yes when Microsoft Draw prompts you to update your document.


For Works for Windows using Canon BJC600, in Printer Setup change the color setting to Screen Match Color in the Printer Setup dialog and print the .wmf image without the copy/paste to Microsoft Draw. The drawback to this workaround is the file will print slower.
