Printing Envelopes to the Canon BJC-600

ID: Q120571

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 3.1
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 2.0, 2.0a, 2.0a-CD, 2.0b, 2.0c, 6.0, 6.0a, 6.0c
  • Microsoft Publisher 2.0

SYMPTOMS

The driver for the Canon Color Bubble Jet BJC-600 forces an envelope to be formatted for landscape orientation even though the envelope is fed in portrait orientation. Other formatting problems, such as truncated or missing text, can occur if the envelope is not set up correctly.

WORKAROUND

To print the envelope correctly, follow the steps below exactly.

  1. Make sure the driver you are using is version 2.0 or later. (Check the driver version in Control Panel by choosing Setup and then choosing About. MSINFO does not report the correct driver version for this driver.)

  2. In Control Panel, make sure that the paper size is set to 8.5- by 11- inches (letter) and that the orientation is set to Portrait. Do not set the size to Envelope.

  3. Make sure that Print Manager is enabled. In Print Manager, choose Background Printing from the Options menu. Under Message Notification When Inactive, select Display All Warnings. This ensures that the appropriate prompts are displayed for manual feed.

  4. In your application, format the envelope for portrait, left aligned, and manual feed.

    Microsoft Publisher

    • In Microsoft Publisher, run the Envelope Wizard and select the following settings when prompted:
A Printer That's Not an HP DeskJet
      Wide (portrait)
      Left aligned
After you create the envelope, change the Paper Source setting in the File Printer Setup dialog box to Manual Feed. Do not change the Paper Size setting.

    Word 6.0 for Windows

    • In Word 6.0 for Windows, select the settings below in the Printing Options dialog box. (To open the Printing Options dialog box, choose Envelopes And Labels from the Tools menu, select the Envelopes tab, choose the Options button, and select the Printing Options tab.)
      Portrait
      Left aligned
      Face up
NOTE: These settings may seem incorrect; however, the print head in this printer is mounted upside down. Think of these settings from the perspective of standing behind the printer looking down to the feeder on the top.

    Word 2.x for Windows

In Word for Windows 2.0 use one of the 2 following methods:

Method 1: Add the following line to the [Microsoft Word] section of the WIN.INI file:
    BJC600=257
Method 2: Use the following procedure to set a printer heuristic using the SetPrinterHeuristic macro, supplied in the NEWMACRO.DOC file supplied with Word 2.x:

    1. Open the NEWMACRO.DOC document.

    2. From the List of Macros, select SetPrinterHeuristic and choose the Demo button.

    3. Select the Avoid using DeviceCapabilities for Paper Size and Orientation option.

    4. For the Envelope Orientation, select Force Portrait.

  5. Make sure the printer is online and does NOT have any paper loaded. (This printer can be online with no paper loaded.) Set the lever on the top right of the printer up to the envelope position and adjust the paper guides to fit the envelope but do not put the envelope in at this time.

  6. Invoke the Print command from the application. The printer should make a noise, and a manual-feed prompt should appear on the computer screen.

  7. Insert the envelope into the printer as shown on the top right of the printer. The printer should load the envelope automatically. Do NOT press any buttons on the printer.

  8. Choose OK to the manual-feed prompt on the computer screen.

  9. The printer should now take the envelope and print.
