Error Installing Spanish Keyboard Layouts

SYMPTOMS

When you are using the U.S. version of Windows 95, you may receive the following error message if you try to add one of the Spanish keyboard layouts using the Keyboard tool in Control Panel:

Windows could not copy the Spanish (Modern Sort) files. Make sure a disk is in your drive, the file is on the disk, and that the drive door is closed.


CAUSE

This problem is caused by an error in the Multilng.inf file included with the U.S. version of Windows 95. The error is known to affect the following keyboard layouts:

  • Basque


  • Catalan


  • Spanish (Mexican)


  • Spanish (Modern Sort)


  • Spanish (Traditional Sort)



RESOLUTION

This issue is resolved by the following updated file for Windows 95:


   SPKBDUPD.EXE (dated 11/27/95) 
The Spkbdupd.exe file installs the following components:
  • A corrected version of the Multilng.inf file (dated 11/27/95).


  • Corrected registry entries for the Spanish keyboard layouts.


  • The Kbdsp.kbd and Kbdla.kbd keyboard layout files.




STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Windows 95. An update to address this problem is now available, but is not fully regression tested and should be applied only to computers experiencing this specific problem. Unless you are severely impacted by this specific problem, Microsoft does not recommend implementing this update at this time. Contact Microsoft Technical Support for additional information about the availability of this update.
