SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to print to a network printer in Windows 95, the following error message may be displayed

SPOOL32 caused a stack fault in module SPOOLSS.DLL at <xxxx:xxxxxxxx>

where <xxxx:xxxxxxxx> is series of hexadecimal digits representing the code segment and actual address in which the stack fault occurred.

CAUSE

This problem can occur when the print provider on your computer and the print provider on the computer that the network printer is connected to are unable to properly communicate with each other. The problem is most likely to occur when the Microsoft Client for Microsoft Networks and the Microsoft Client for NetWare Networks are both installed on your computer, although the problem is not network-related.

RESOLUTION

This issue is resolved by the following updated file for Windows 95 and OSR2, and later versions of this file:


   SPOOLSS.DLL  version 4.00.951  dated 10/23/96  86,528 bytes

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Windows 95 and OEM Service Release 2 (OSR2). An update to address this problem is now available, but is not fully regression tested and should be applied only to computers experiencing this specific problem. Unless you are severely impacted by this specific problem, Microsoft does not recommend implementing this update at this time. Contact Microsoft Technical Support for additional information about the availability of this update.

This issue is resolved in Microsoft Windows 98.
