Auto Insert Notification Polling May Prevent Automatic Suspend

ID: Q164103

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 95
  • Microsoft Windows 95 OEM Service Release version 1
  • Microsoft Windows 95 OEM Service Release version 2
  • Microsoft Windows 95 OEM Service Release version 2.1

SYMPTOMS

Some computers are equipped with power management features that place the computer in a suspended power state after a certain period of inactivity. If the Auto Insert Notification option is enabled for IDE CD-ROM drives on such a computer, and the computer uses the Intel PIIX 3 IDE controller chip set, the computer may not be suspended automatically.

CAUSE

The drive polling that Windows performs to determine drive status is detected by the power management components as drive activity. The drive controller reports that the drive is still in use, preventing the computer from being suspended.

RESOLUTION

This issue is resolved by the following updated file for Windows 95 and OSR2, and later versions of this file:

   CDVSD.VXD version 4.00.1112 dated 10/17/96 16,055 bytes

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Windows 95 and OEM Service Release 2 (OSR2). An update to address this problem is now available, but is not fully regression tested and should be applied only to computers experiencing this specific problem. Unless you are severely impacted by this specific problem, Microsoft does not recommend implementing this update at this time. Contact Microsoft Technical Support for additional information about the availability of this update.

This issue is resolved in Microsoft Windows 98.
