General Protection Fault When Browsing for Device Drivers

SYMPTOMS

When Windows detects a new Plug and Play device in your computer and you are prompted to locate the device drivers, you may receive one of the following error messages:

An Exception OD has occurred at memory address
-or-
Msgsrv32 has caused a General Protection Fault in module Kernel32
-or-
Msgsrv32 caused an invalid page fault in Msgsrv32.dll
-or-
MSGSRV32 caused an invalid page fault in module Kernel32.dll
NOTE: You can also receive these error messages if you refresh Device Manager, and then browse to install the drivers of any detected device.


RESOLUTION

A supported fix that corrects this problem is now available from Microsoft, but it has not been fully regression tested and should be applied only to systems experiencing this specific problem.

STATUS

This issue does not occur in Windows 98.
