  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 1.0, 1.1, 1.1a, 2.0, 2.0a, 2.0b, 6.0, 6.0a

SUMMARY

You can convert Windows Cardfile files to ASCII format by installing the Generic/Text Only printer driver and configuring it to print to the FILE port. You can then open the output file with an ASCII text editor (such as Windows Notepad), or import the file into another application (such as Word for Windows). Alternatively, you can use a utility written specifically to convert Cardfile files to other formats.

MORE INFORMATION

You can use the following procedure to import Cardfile information into Microsoft Notepad, Microsoft Word, or another application.

To convert a Cardfile file to text format, do the following:

  1. To install the Generic/Text Only printer driver, first choose the Printers icon in Control Panel.

  2. Configure the Generic/Text Only printer driver to the FILE port.

  3. Open Cardfile and load the .CRD file you want to import.

  4. From the File menu, choose Print Setup.

  5. In the Print Setup dialog box, select the Specific Printer option button, and then select the Generic/Text Only driver.

  6. Choose the Options button. In the Options dialog box, select No Page Break.

  7. From the File menu, choose Page Setup. Clear the Header and Footer boxes.

  8. Close the dialog boxes and choose Print All from the File menu. You are prompted for a filename. Enter the complete path and filename with a .TXT extension.

  9. Close Cardfile and open Word for Windows. You can now open the document as a text file and convert it to Word format. There may be extra blank lines if all Cardfile lines were not used. (These have to be removed manually.)

You can now load the file into any application that reads text files.

NOTE: To use this procedure with Windows 3.0, you must select Generic/Text Only as the active printer.

Cardfile Conversion Utilities

Several public-domain utilities that allow the conversion of Cardfile files to ASCII text format are available.

The following are a few examples that have been available on CompuServe.

   File Name Notes
   --------------------------------------------------------------------
   CARDCO.ZIP
XL2CRD.ZIP Transfers Excel 2.1d spreadsheets to Cardfile format.
WINCRD.ZIP Converts Cardfile .CRD format to ASCII files.
There is another freeware tool that converts Cardfile databases to tab- delimited text files. This tool (TRANSFIL.EXE) is available on some BBSs (in the archive CARDXLT2.ZIP).
