One or More Characters Positioned Incorrectly on HPPCL5A

ID: Q81658

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows versions 3.0, 3.0a, 3.1, 3.11
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 1.0, 1.1, 1.1a, 2.0

SYMPTOMS

When Word for Windows documents are printed to a Hewlett-Packard (HP) LaserJet Series III printer using the HPPCL5A.DRV printer driver versions 3.70 and 3.77, an occasional character may be printed out of place when the graphics resolution of the driver is set to 75 dots per inch (dpi) or 150 dpi.

The character that is positioned incorrectly prints in the same horizontal location as the character above, but is one line lower. Sometimes, the character looks as if other characters were printed over it.

CAUSE

Versions 3.70 and 3.77 of the HPPCL5A.DRV driver improve performance by issuing position moves only when needed. However, these drivers cause a move to be skipped when the intended position is exactly half the distance of the current position in 150 dpi resolution, or 1/4 the distance when in 75 dpi.

RESOLUTION

To correct this problem, upgrade to the HPPCL5A driver version 3.86.

Word for Windows 2.0 and 2.0a ship with HPPCL5A.DRV versions 30.3.85 and 30.3.86 respectively.

This problem is corrected in the HPPCL5A driver version 31.3.89, which ships with Microsoft Windows 3.1.

Temporary Workarounds

  • Change the printer resolution in the Printer Setup dialog box to 300 dpi.

  • Change the position of the affected character.
