Word for Windows 1.1a Shows Wrong Characters in WingDings Font

SYMPTOMS

When you use the Microsoft Windows version 3.1 WingDings TrueType font in Microsoft Word for Windows version 1.1a, several characters do not display properly. For instance, the WingDing black 8 ball character shows up as a pair of WingDing black 6 balls. The next four characters in the WingDings character set also display incorrectly.

This problem does not occur in later versions of Microsoft Word for Windows.

CAUSE

Word for Windows 1.1a remaps the character set in use. In this case, every time a double-quotation mark is used (which translates to the black 8 ball in WingDings), Word 1.1a remaps this character to a pair of single quotation marks (which translate to black 6 balls in WingDings).

Word for Windows 1.1a also remaps other characters. The bullet symbol is mapped to an "o," while the em and en dash are changed to the regular dash character.

This behavior also affects other character sets, including Symbol TrueType.
