TIFF Images Don't Print to PostScript from Word, PowerPoint

ID: Q82601

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows versions 3.1, 3.11
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 2.0, 2.0a
  • Microsoft PowerPoint for Windows, version 2.x

SYMPTOMS

When using Microsoft applications, such as Word for Windows and Microsoft PowerPoint, that interpret tag image file format (TIFF), the images may be blank when printed to a PostScript printer.

CAUSE

There are two reasons why the printout is blank:

  • The TIFF converter sets the foreground color to white when printing.

  • The TIFF converter forces the PostScript driver to request a simulation, which uses the foreground color and draws white (foreground color). The result is a white foreground on a white background.

WORKAROUND

To receive a correct printout of the TIFF file, use a different application (such as CorelDraw) that reads TIFF images, and convert the image to a device independent bitmap (DIB).

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Word for Windows version 2.0 and 2.0a and in PowerPoint versions 2.x. This problem was corrected and does not occur in later versions of these products.
