Icon Titles Unreadable in Windows Program Manager

ID: Q83377

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows versions 3.0, 3.0a, 3.1, 3.11
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, version 4.0
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 2.0, 2.0a

SUMMARY

After version 2.0 or 2.0a of Microsoft Word for Windows or version 4.0 of Microsoft Excel is installed, the icons in the Microsoft Windows Program Manager may become unreadable.

To correct this problem, move the following line to the end of the [fonts] section of the WIN.INI file in the WINDOWS directory:

     Small Fonts (VGA res)=SMALLE.FON
If moving the SMALLE.FON entry to the end of the [fonts] section of the WIN.INI file does not solve the problem, place a semicolon at the beginning of the SMALLE.FON entry so that it reads as follows:

     ;Small Fonts (VGA res)=SMALLE.FON
The semicolon prevents SMALLE.FON from being loaded when Windows starts.

This information applies to Microsoft Windows operating system versions 3.0, 3.0a, and 3.1.

MORE INFORMATION

The Setup programs for version 4.0 of Microsoft Excel and for versions 2.0 and 2.0a of Microsoft Word modify the WIN.INI file and change the order in which the fonts are read as Windows starts. As a result, the icons in the Program Manager may become unreadable because a different font may be used for the icons. This problem usually occurs when a third-party high-resolution video driver is used.
