After version 2.0 or 2.0a of Microsoft Word for Windows or version 4.0
of Microsoft Excel is installed, the icons in the Microsoft Windows
Program Manager may become unreadable.
If moving the SMALLE.FON entry to the end of the [fonts] section of
the WIN.INI file does not solve the problem, place a semicolon at the
beginning of the SMALLE.FON entry so that it reads as follows:
The semicolon prevents SMALLE.FON from being loaded when Windows
starts.
This information applies to Microsoft Windows operating system versions 3.0, 3.0a, and 3.1. MORE INFORMATION
The Setup programs for version 4.0 of Microsoft Excel and for versions
2.0 and 2.0a of Microsoft Word modify the WIN.INI file and change the
order in which the fonts are read as Windows starts. As a result, the
icons in the Program Manager may become unreadable because a different
font may be used for the icons. This problem usually occurs when a
third-party high-resolution video driver is used.
