Generic PostScript Doesn't Reflect Orientation Change

ID: Q84568

  • Microsoft Windows 3.1
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 2.0, 2.0a, 2.0a-CD, 2.0b
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, version 4.0

  • Microsoft Publisher versions 1.0, 1.0a, 2.0, 2.0a
  • Microsoft PowerPoint for Windows, versions 2.0, 3.0, 4.0

SYMPTOMS

When a document is printed from version 2.0 of Microsoft Word for Windows using Microsoft Windows version 3.1 and the generic "PostScript Printer" driver version 3.5, changing the paper orientation inside Word for Windows is not reflected in the output.

For example, if you install the generic PostScript Printer driver in Control Panel with portrait orientation, and then start Word for Windows and change the orientation to landscape, the document is printed in portrait orientation.

WORKAROUNDS

There are two solutions to this problem:

  • Install the driver for the actual model PostScript printer you have, not the generic PostScript printer. For example, install the driver for the Apple LaserWriter IINT, not for the generic PostScript printer.

  • -or-

  • Use Control Panel to set the printer orientation to landscape.

MORE INFORMATION

The generic PostScript Printer driver was added to Windows 3.1 for backward compatibility with applications programmed to look for the name PostScript. In Windows 3.1, you should install for the model of printer you have or for the model that your printer emulates.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the PSCRIPT.DRV file included with Windows version 3.1. We are researching this problem and will post new information here as it becomes available.
