Common Dialog Boxes Don't Support Half-Point Sizes for Fonts

ID: Q84643

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows versions 3.1, 3.11
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 2.0, 2.0a, 2.0a-CD
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, versions 3.0, 4.0

SUMMARY

The common dialog boxes (COMMDLG.DLL) used in Microsoft Windows version 3.1 do not support half-point sizes. This is true for both device fonts and TrueType fonts.

MORE INFORMATION

In Windows, an application that controls its own font dialog boxes can support the choice of point sizes in half-size increments.

For example, if you are using version 3.0 of Microsoft Excel for Windows, which controls its own font dialog box, you can choose Fonts from the Format menu and enter a half-point size, such as 8.5. This functionality is useful when printing to forms. However, Excel version 4.0 uses common dialog boxes, and therefore is limited to integer font sizes.

Likewise, Word for Windows versions 2.0, 2.0a, and 2.0a-CD control the Font box in the Format Character dialog box; therefore, Word accepts half-point sizes (for example, 11.5) in the point-size boxes on the ribbon and in the Format Character dialog box.
