Incorrect Form Feed Printing Nonstandard Page Using ESCP2.DRV

SYMPTOMS

In Word for Windows, running under Microsoft Windows 3.1, if you print labels or any other custom page size using the Epson ESCP2.DRV printer driver version 1.0, Word sends a form feed at the wrong location. For example, Word may send a form feed after only three labels print; or Word may send a form feed that causes the printing to start too far up or down on the page.

CAUSE

The ESCP2.DRV printer driver cannot print custom page sizes. It prints correctly only when you use standard page sizes.

WORKAROUND

Use an alternate printer driver (EPSON24.DRV) and format your document using the following instructions:

1. When you choose Page Layout from the Format menu and select the Paper Source option, Tractor MUST be selected for the First Page and Other Pages settings. No other setting works correctly when you are print merging labels.
   
   To print labels, a custom page size is set in your Word for Windows main print merge document. For example, if you use Avery label No. 4145, the page length is set to three labels. If you set the paper source to a non-tractor option, Word for Windows sends a form feed after each 3-label page.



2. For labels, you must not include more than the maximum number of lines of text, which you can calculate using the following formula:

   n = (72/L)*h

   where n is the maximum number of lines per label (round down to the nearest whole number), L is the line spacing in points, and h is the height of the label in inches.
   
   For example, if you are using 1-inch-high labels (h=1) and 12-point line spacing (L=12), the maximum number of lines per label is six (n=6).



3. Your main print merge document should be only one page long. If you choose Print Preview from the File menu, only one page should be displayed. If additional or blank pages are displayed, blank paragraphs, section breaks, or page breaks may appear at the bottom of your document.



4. Change the printer driver to an Epson LQ-1050. It will support custom paper sizes.
