Soft Fonts with HP IIP Unavailable in Landscape to Series II

SUMMARY

If downloadable bitmap fonts are installed specifically for the Hewlett Packard (HP) LaserJet IIP or IID printer under Microsoft Windows, and the Windows "PCL/HP LaserJet" driver is later configured for the LaserJet Series II (not the IIP or IID), the downloadable fonts are unavailable for landscape mode printing. For example, if the Bitstream presentation fonts that are shipped with PowerPoint version 2.0 are installed for a LaserJet IID, the fonts do not appear on the Style Fonts list if a presentation is composed for an HP LaserJet Series II in landscape mode.

Because the HP IIP and IID printers are able to internally rotate downloaded fonts, the Bitstream Font Generator only builds portrait fonts when asked to generate fonts for these printers. The LaserJet Plus and LaserJet Series II are unable to rotate fonts, and therefore must have a specific set of landscape fonts installed in order to use those fonts in landscape mode.

If a LaserJet IIP or IID printer is no longer available, the program that built the fonts must be run again in order to create the correct fonts for the particular model of printer that is available. If the program that built the fonts was PowerPoint 2.0, do the following:

1. Put the PowerPoint for Windows Setup disk in drive A or drive B.



2. In Program Manager, choose Run from the File menu, and type A:SETUP or B:SETUP in the Command Line box.



3. At the first PowerPoint Setup screen, choose Install Using Options.



4. The PowerPoint Setup program will ask where the options are to be installed. Verify that the directory suggested is the location of the current PowerPoint installation (the default is C:\POWERPNT).



5. A checklist of the different PowerPoint options will be presented.
   Select the last option (Install Bitstream Presentation Fonts) and clear all other options.



6. Choose the Select Fonts button.



7. In the Select Fonts dialog box, verify that the specified printer is the "LaserJet Series II or compatible."



8. Select the desired options for font installation. The options are as follows:
   
   
   • Recommended Sizes and Styles (to 36 pts.)
   
   
   
   • Additional Sizes and Styles of Plain and Plain Italic (18 to 36 pts.)
   
   
   
   • Large sizes in bold and bold italic (48, 56, 72 pt.)
   
   
   
   • Large sizes in plain and plain italic (48, 56, 72 pt.)
   
   
   



9. Choose the OK button.
