Large File Size When Printing TrueType Fonts to a File

ID: Q86859

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows versions 3.1, 3.11
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 1.0, 1.1, 1.1a, 2.0, 2.0a

SUMMARY

If your printer prints TrueType fonts as rasterized graphic images and you print to a file in Microsoft Windows version 3.1, the size of the print file may become very large. This is because the instructions for printing fonts as graphics are much longer than the instructions for downloading TrueType or printer fonts.

MORE INFORMATION

Workaround 1

Some printers, such as the Canon LBP-4, LBP-8 II, or LBP-8 III, and the Hewlett-Packard (HP) DeskJet, DeskJet Plus, or DeskJet 500, can print TrueType fonts only at specific printer-resolution settings. At other printer-resolution settings, these printers download the fonts as graphic images. To reduce the print file size on these printers, change the printer-resolution setting to one that supports the downloading of TrueType fonts. Workaround 2

In the printer driver Setup box, select the Use Printer Fonts For All TrueType Fonts option. This setting causes your printer to substitute printer-resident fonts for TrueType fonts and thus substantially reduces the print file size.
