Duplex Printing Fails on HP LaserJet Series IID

ID: Q88904

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 3.1
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 2.0, 2.0a, 2.0a-CD

SYMPTOMS

If you print a page in duplex mode when one page is formatted for landscape and the other page is formatted for portrait orientation, each page prints on a separate piece of paper instead of on the same piece of paper. This problem occurs when you use the HPPCL.DRV printer driver version 1.1 and the Universal Printer Driver versions 3.1 or 3.1.1, for Microsoft Windows version 3.1, to print on a Hewlett-Packard (HP) LaserJet Series IID printer.

NOTE: If you print a document in duplex mode and each pair of pages is formatted for the same orientation, the document prints correctly, even if the document contains both landscape and portrait formatting. The only situation in which duplex printing fails is when the pages are not formatted for the same orientation.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem with version 1.1 of HPPCL.DRV and the Universal Printer Driver versions 3.1 and 3.1.1, for Windows version 3.1. We are researching this problem and will post new information here as it becomes available.
