  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 2.0, 2.0a, 2.0a-CD, 2.0b
  • Microsoft Publisher for Windows, version 2.0

SYMPTOMS

When you print to a Hewlett-Packard (HP) LaserJet Plus or compatible printer from Microsoft Windows version 3.1, text may appear truncated or have white bands through it. This behavior occurs when all of the following are true:

  • Your document is formatted for landscape orientation.

  • Your computer has less than 4 MB of memory.

  • Your document is formatted with a TrueType font.

In versions 2.0, 2.0a, 2.0a-CD, and 2.0b of Microsoft Word for Windows, this behavior occurs when you use the Create Envelope feature to print an envelope when there is less than 4 MB of available memory (to check available memory, choose About from the Help menu).

This problem can also occur in Microsoft Publisher. Occasionally the problem is white lines through text, instead of banding.

CAUSE

This problem occurs on printers that cannot download TrueType fonts, such as the HP LaserJet Plus, Tandy LPB-1000, and Brother HL-8. These printers print TrueType fonts as graphics instead.

WORKAROUND

  • Avoid using a TrueType font when printing in landscape orientation.

  • -or-

  • Add more memory to your computer system.
