SUMMARY

Versions 2.0 (HPPCL5MS.DRV) and 31.3.89 (HPPCL5A.DRV) of the printer driver for the Hewlett-Packard (HP) LaserJet Series III printer handle the printing of graphic images differently. HPPCL5A.DRV uses three graphics printing modes:

  • LineArt Images

  • Photographic Images

  • HP ScanJet Images

HPPCL5MS.DRV does not use these graphics printing modes. Instead, this printer driver uses Intensity and Dithering settings to govern the printing of graphic images.

MORE INFORMATION

The Microsoft HPPCL5MS.DRV printer driver supplied with Windows for Workgroups version 3.1 completely replaces the HPPCL5A.DRV printer driver shipped with Windows version 3.1. All LaserJet Series III printers can use the HPPCL5MS driver. HPPCL5MS.DRV uses version 3.1.2 of the Windows Universal Printer Driver because it supports scalable fonts.

Use the following steps to modify the graphics printing settings for either of these printer drivers:

  1. Open Windows Print Manager.

  2. From the Options menu, choose Printer Setup. Select HP LaserJet III in the Installed Printers box and choose the Setup button.

  3. Choose the Options button.

HPPCL5A.DRV (Version 31.3.89)

From the Gray Scale list, choose the LineArt Images, Photographic Images, or HP ScanJet Image option, and choose the OK button three times.

HPPCL5MS.DRV (Version 2.0)

In the Options dialog box, select an Intensity and Dithering setting and choose the OK button three times. To adjust the Intensity control, drag the thumb between the Lighter and Darker setting (Darker corresponds to 0 percent and Lighter corresponds to 100 percent).

Note: The Intensity and Dithering controls are features of the Universal Printer Driver.

The graphics settings in HPPCL5MS and HPPCL5A correspond as follows:

   HPPCL5MS
   Dithering Intensity HPPCL5A
