Output Is Centered on Custom Paper Sizes on the HP LaserJet 4

ID: Q93245

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows versions 3.1, 3.11
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 2.0, 2.0a, 2.0a-CD, 2.0b, 2.0c
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, versions 3.0, 4.0, 4.0a

SYMPTOMS

If you format your Word for Windows document for a custom paper size and print it to a Hewlett-Packard (HP) LaserJet 4 printer using the HP LaserJet 4/4M printer driver (HPPCL5E.DRV) version 31.1.03, or 31.v1.20, the printer aligns the output in the center of the paper feed path instead of on the left. This causes incorrect output because the multipurpose paper tray feeds custom-sized paper on the left side of the paper feed path.

RESOLUTION

To correct the problem, set a printer heuristic (HPPCL5E=+2) in the [Microsoft Word 2.0] section of the Windows WIN.INI file that forces the printer driver to send the job through the left side of the paper feed path.

MORE INFORMATION

For information on setting printer heuristics using the SetPrinterHeuristic macro or using the Options command in Word for Windows, query on the following words in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

newmacro.doc and win.ini and printer and heuristics and options
NOTE: This problem occurs in Windows Write even when you set the above printer heuristic. Windows Write is not able to override the printer driver command that centers print jobs.

The HPPCL5E.DRV printer driver is manufactured by Hewlett-Packard, a vendor independent of Microsoft; we make no warranty, implied or otherwise, regarding this product's performance or reliability.
