SYMPTOMS

When you print shaded paragraphs to a Hewlett-Packard (HP) LaserJet 4 printer using the HP LaserJet 4/4M printer driver (HPPCL5E.DRV) version 31.1.03, the paragraph shading may print incorrectly. The first page may print correctly, but the shading pattern on subsequent pages prints at the wrong percentage (for example, 10 percent shading prints as 30 percent shading). This problem has also occurs if you print shaded titles. The first page prints correctly, but subsequent pages are not shaded correctly.

WORKAROUND

To correctly print shading on the HP LaserJet 4, change the printer driver Graphics Mode setting in the Print Setup dialog box with the following steps:

  1. In Word for Windows, choose Print Setup from the File menu.

  2. Select the Hewlett-Packard 4/4M printer driver and choose the Setup button.

  3. Choose the Options button.

  4. Under Graphics Mode, select Raster instead of HP-GL/2.

  5. Choose the OK button three times.
