Epson ESC P/2 Printers Print Slowly

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Windows version 3.1, if you print to an Epson ESC P/2 printer using the ESCP2.DRV printer driver, print jobs are printed slowly.

CAUSE

The Epson ESCP2.DRV driver for the ESC P/2 line of Epson printers is designed to print TrueType fonts only under Windows 3.1. Any other fonts that show up in an application, such as Word for Windows, are Windows screen fonts. The ESCP2.DRV rasterizes these fonts and sends them to the printer as graphics.

Because TrueType fonts are sent to all dot-matrix printers as graphics, the printer prints them in graphics mode, which is very slow. Because other fonts are also printed as graphics with this driver, all printing is slow on this printer.

WORKAROUND

If you want to print using the built-in printer (device) fonts on the ESC P/2 printers, switch to EPLQ.DRV, which is the printer driver designed to support the device fonts. To obtain the most current version of this printer driver, contact Epson.
