HP LaserJet III and 4: Excel Color Borders Do Not Print

ID: Q94161

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows versions 3.1, 3.11
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, version 4.0

SUMMARY

When using the printer driver for the Hewlett-Packard (HP) LaserJet 4/4M (HPPCL5E.DRV) version 1.03 or 1.04 or the HP LaserJet III series (HPPCL5A.DRV or HPPCL5MS.DRV), some colored border lines may not print, depending on the color of the border and the type of video driver being used.

MORE INFORMATION

The driver uses the color matching tables provided by Windows to match the color chosen for the border with an appropriate gray-scale color. If the video driver in use is 256 color or greater, this matching seems to be more accurate than if the video driver is 16 color. With the 16-color driver, some colors do not get mapped correctly and are printed as white.

The following colors are remapped to white if EGA, VGA, or 8514/a display drivers are used:

  • Light Gray

  • Magenta

  • Green

  • Cyan

  • Yellow

There are three possible workarounds for this problem:
  • If a LaserJet 4/4M is being used with the HPPCL5E driver, change the graphics mode to HP-GL/2.

  • -or-

  • Change the color of the border to a color that will be printed.

  • -or-

  • Use a 256-color driver if one is available.
