Orientation Reversed with Ledger Size Paper on Some Printers

ID: Q94177

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows versions 3.1, 3.11
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 2.0, 2.0a, 2.0a-CD, 2.0b, 2.0c
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, versions 3.0, 4.0

SUMMARY

When using ledger size (11-by-17-inch) paper with some laser and inkjet printers, the printed orientation may be printed opposite of what is selected in the application.

For example, in Microsoft Write and Microsoft Excel, when "portrait" is the selected orientation, the document prints in landscape orientation. Also, the paper dimensions show as width 17" and height as 11". Selecting Landscape" orientation reverses the dimensions and prints portrait.

The same thing occurs in Microsoft Word 2.0 for Windows, except that when the orientation is changed to "landscape," Word changes the paper size to Custom Size and the document does not print correctly.
