Cannot Print Ornate, Complex TrueType Fonts

ID: Q94715

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows versions 3.1, 3.11
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 1.0, 1.1, 1.1a, 2.0, 2.0a, 2.0a-CD, 2.0b, 2.0c
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, versions 3.0, 4.0
  • Microsoft PowerPoint for Windows, version 3.0

SYMPTOMS

Sometimes complex or ornate TrueType fonts do not print. When this happens, you may be able to print the fonts by changing the OutlineThreshold setting in the [True Type] section of your Windows WIN.INI file.

The default OutlineThreshold setting is 256 pels-per-em. If you change this setting to 70 (OutlineThreshold=70), your complex TrueType fonts may print. If you change the OutlineThreshold setting to 70, printing speed is slower.

MORE INFORMATION

Use the following syntax for the OutlineThreshold setting:

OutlineThreshold=<number-of-pels-per-em>
This setting specifies the number of pels-per-em (range: 0-300) at which Windows renders TrueType fonts as outline fonts instead of as bitmap fonts. Bitmap fonts print more quickly, but they require more memory. If you are low on memory, decrease this value. Do not specify a value over 300. If you do, you might encounter problems using TrueType fonts.
