Centered and Justified Text Prints Incorrectly with HP4 Driver

ID: Q95603

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows versions 3.0, 3.0a, 3.1, 3.11
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 2.0, 2.0a, 2.0a-CD, 2.0b, 2.0c, 6.0a

SYMPTOMS

When you use the version 1.03 or 1.04 HPPCL5E.DRV Hewlett-Packard (HP) LaserJet 4/4M driver to print from Word for Windows, text that is centered or right justified may not be printed in the correct position. This happens with several scalable fonts when you print at 300-dots-per-inch (dpi) or 600-dpi resolution. We have reports of the problem also occuring with the HP 4P using driver version 1.27.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, do one of the following:

  • Use the HP LaserJet Series IIID printer driver (HPPCL5A.DRV for Windows version 3.1).

  • -or-

  • Use the CG Times or Albertus font.

  • -or-

  • If the problem occurs when you print at 600 dpi, try printing at 300 dpi instead.

NOTE: This workaround does not always correct the problem.

  • -or-

  • Format the text with a different point size than the one that is causing the problem.

STATUS

Microsoft is researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
