SUMMARY

When you use the Hewlett-Packard (HP) LaserJet 4/4M printer driver (HPPCL5E.DRV) version 31.1.03 or 31.1.08 for Windows version 3.1, you can select either Multipurpose (MP) Tray or Manual Feed as the Paper Source option in your application. Both choices refer to the front pull-out tray on the HP LaserJet 4. The printer behaves differently depending on which one of these paper sources you select.

MORE INFORMATION

When you print to the HP LaserJet 4, the application sends paper source and paper size information to the printer. The LaserJet 4 behaves as described in the following sections based on the paper source information received.

Paper Source: Manual Tray

When the paper source option is Manual Tray, the HP LaserJet 4 goes offline and compares the size of the paper in the print job to the available paper sizes to determine the best match. The printer then prompts you to feed this paper size. After you place the paper in the manual tray, press the Online button to print the page.

Paper Source: Multipurpose Tray

When the paper source option is Multipurpose Tray, the LaserJet 4 first checks to see if the multipurpose tray is active (to activate this tray, set the multipurpose tray to CASS [MP Tray = Cass] on the printer). If the multipurpose tray is active, the printer compares the paper size of the print job to the paper size setting on the multipurpose tray. If the multipurpose tray is not set for the correct paper size, the LaserJet checks to see if the correct paper size is in the lower tray. If the lower tray contains the correct paper size, the LaserJet sends the print job to that tray. If the lower tray does not have the correct paper size, the LaserJet goes offline and prompts you to feed the correct paper size in the multipurpose tray.

NOTE: When the LaserJet receives a print job, it matches the paper size to the closest size it recognizes.

The following flow chart describes the above process visually:
