Mailing Labels Misalign on Toshiba P351 Printer

ID: Q96943

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows versions 3.1, 3.11
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 2.0, 2.0a, 2.0a-CD, 2.0b, 2.0c

SYMPTOMS

If you create mailing labels in Word for Windows and print them on a Toshiba P351 printer in IBM Graphics printer emulation mode using the IBM Graphics printer driver, the labels may misalign. The labels appear correctly in print preview or page layout view. Sometimes the misalignment occurs in small increments, which means you may not notice it until several rows of labels have printed.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the Toshiba P351 (a 24-pin printer) uses a different linefeed unit than the IBM Graphics printer (a 9-pin printer). The Toshiba P351 converts and then rounds the IBM Graphics linefeed values, which sometimes causes a small misalignment when the labels print. In effect, the Toshiba printer is not completely emulating the IBM Graphics printer.

MORE INFORMATION

The Toshiba P351 manual states the following:

The IBM's unit of space for a linefeed is 1/72". Toshiba's linefeed
increment is 1/120th of an inch. The Toshiba printer converts the
number of 72nds you specify to Toshiba units and closely approximates
what the distance would be on an IBM printer.
The same labels print correctly on an IBM Graphics printer using the IBM Graphics driver.
